Book of james chapter 1 commentary10/16/2023 James starts his letter with a greeting “to the twelve tribes in the Dispersion” According to Gay L. A diaspora who are in new lands trying to maintain their culture through the empire. A sermon that the author writes to the diaspora that is scattered around the empire. Metzer agrees that it reads more like a sermon than a letter (Metzer 2003 287). The Epistle of James is supposed to be a letter but it is more sermonic than a letter, something a pastor or a preacher at a church would preach at their congregants. The Epistle of James is a rare gem among the letters of the New Testament. I have never fully taken a good look at the Epistle of James because 1st never really thought it was important enough to read and it’s a hard to find letter, placed after the poplar letter of Hebrews.
